Visiting professors to take part in block teaching and supervision in the graduate programs (Masters and PhD)
To discharge the responsibility of building the capacity of 34 universities and public offices of the country AAU has developed various PhD programs in collaboration with international universities to address the capacity building requirements of this nation which is growing in population to close 100 million. External Examiner for PhD Candidates
Other involvement of the international scholars in the graduate programs of AAU is engagement in the final examinations of the students at the defense of their PhD dissertations. As shown in the table below, during the period of July 1, 2014 to June 30,2015, 168 distinguished professors were invited to come to AAU with Sida support as external examiners. As a natural outcome of the academic exercise, the external examiners have commented that they were satisfied with the quality of the work done, as their expectations have been met. Such undertakings, too, are believed to be to calibrate, test and challenge the in-house PhD programs at AAU.
Females Scholarship of Masters Students
As it is true in developing countries, the number of females in the schools and still worse in higher education systems is very small. That does not make Ethiopia and AAU any different. Recognizing the need to develop a gender balanced society for the advancement of the country in this changing globalized world, AAU and Sida have taken steps to improve the involvement of female students in AAU, particularly at the graduate programs levels.
Special need Scholarship of Masters Students
Besides the support of Sida to female graduate students mentioned above, it has also extended its support to MA/MSc students with disabilities. Out of 709 disadvantaged students Sida supports 34 of them only (4.8%), mainly selected based on their academic performance, family financial status, distance from their home town, ability to cover their cost-sharing debts at undergraduate studies, etc. Here again the suggestions and actions made for the females should also be enhanced for disadvantaged students so that they transform themselves from the consumer status to contributor level in the development status and beat the stigma.
